Second fish i've ever caught (and released)

Description:

From the Liverpool-Leeds Canal near Ormskirk. Only just started fishing so i'm clueless to IDing fish. Caught and safely released this little guy with bread after just 15mins of fishing (and didn't catch anything else the rest of the day).

Do you (or the people who have given an ID) know any good resources for fish ID for example websites with pictures or keys to help with identification.

Yes I'd say...

Yes I'd say you are right Chris. The anal fin is too short for a Bream and looks more like a Roach x Bream hybrid.
Counting the rays of a fin can be a way of distinguishing fish species but this photograph isn't clear enough for me to do that and of course you need to know who has what number of rays where and I don't have that either.But I do remember seeing a book which did although I'm not sure it went down the road of the hybrids to far.I wonder was it The Observer book of Freshwater Fishes?

www.marlin.ac.uk/species.php has a very good but not completely comprehensive ID guide for marine fish (and other species) I also find www.fishbase.org very useful
