what

makes you think the female is a Mandarin? looks typicality Wood Duck to me.

Duck ID

I am 99% sure because they are ducks that have bred (not interbred) on another pond on my land. The female Carolina has much more white behind her eye, a real teardrop shape. The female mandarin has a white stripe. Manndarins are also slighter in shape - they are very similar but my instinct tells me its a mandarin female.
