Dug up from 6 inches down beneath some forsythia bushes in the garden. Thin white threads visible from one of these spheres.

did you try to 'hatch them out', could try in milk bottle or similar container might or might not work. have n't tried it myself.
If in doubt, slice it in half and if reasonably developed, you will see the developing stinkhorn enclosed in jelly. See http://www.nifg.org.uk/species/photos/Phallus_impudicus3.jpg. If it is solid, it maybe a truffle.
