Gorgeous bird, lucky you. I have seen red heads here in Hampshire. Is it usual for males to be seen at this time of the year at your location?
I don't know anything about Smews. These birds were photographed at a site owned by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust.
Presumably, these are in a collection, as it would be pretty unusual to find a Smew and an Hawaiian Goose in the wild together!!

Yes, Castle Espie is owned by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. It was my first ever visit. The only duck I could have IDed before this was a mallard!
