The tree fell sideways many years ago and the branches have continued to grow upward from the trunk. It is the only tree of its kind in the area.

You would need to check whether there are any glands where the leaf joins its stalk, detectable as small lumps. The native Black Poplar would not have them. Yours shows no sign of galls on the leaf stalks, so is probably the hybrid Populus x canadensis.
