Orange spotted beetle, please help

Hi, sorry but I need to find out the name of a pair of orange spotted beetles I saw, they were about 5-6 cm long can't remember if they were winged or not, but they were both hiding under a hessian mat in grassland scrub and were I think also carrying their young, either that or they were being eaten alive by mites. Any suggestions would be a big help.
Thanks

5-6 cm is a bit on the long

5-6 cm is a bit on the long side, but the description and reference to mites suggests Nicrophorus carrion beetles. Google that for images and see if they were.
