Strange hole in garden

Observed: 1st June 2011 By: Gerard

These have appeared in our lawn, they are well rounded holes often with three distinct lobes about 8 cm across and up to 30 cm deep. They show no signs of digging on the surface or sub surface and we have seen no animals in them. The soil is clay rich and very dry. What are they?

Just a suggestion, but heavy

Just a suggestion, but heavy clay soil is very prone to cracking in dry weather and it has been very dry. My own garden has big cracks in it as well especially near leylandii

Possible sign of moles? We

Possible sign of moles? We too have a lot of this kind of cracking as the ground has dried out. Keep your eyes peeled for molehills nearby after a decent amount of rainfall.
