Reindeer - not wild :-)

These are part of the herd from the Cairngorms, visiting Edinburgh for the season. They seemed to be having an altercation about a sleigh

I happen to know what is happening here.

These animals are Dancer(Rangifer tarandus praesuli) and Prancer(Rangifer tarandus ingrediori) and they are argueing over who will be on the right and who on the left when harnessed onto Santas sleigh this evening.

Note: it is a little known fact that Santa had his reindeer mtDNA tested and it was found there was enough genetic drift for each animal to be considered a sub-species in their own right. The jury is out on whether Rudolf (Rangifer tarandus rudoi) is a seperate species or a sub-species - mainland Europe, except Lapland, argue for sub-species and America argues for species.

Merry Xmas and a happy New Year!
