Description:

An impressively large snail! There are quite a lot of these on the chalk of the Chilterns escarpment, although this one was in an area of conifer plantation where the leaf-litter was presumably more acidic. These snails are now protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Snap!

I saw one of these beauties while I was walking in Pednor Vale this afternoon. Although our area is very chalky, this snail was in the bracken alongside a path. I have NEVER seen one before and although I recognised it from books (Natural History and Cookery!) I had no idea it was so local! Extra pleased now! Have you seen them before??

Liz, dodging kids, chores, hens and clegs.

Chilterns

I've only seem them since I've been living near the Chilterns for the last few years, and was pleased to make their acquaintance. Excuse my ignorance, but whereabouts is Pednor Vale?
