I thought that this was something very odd, but it turns out that it's probably been marked with a felt-tip pen for study purposes

meconium?

The meconium (waste products accumulated during the pupal stage, voided by the butterfly soon after it hastches)
of some butterflies can be pink, perhaps it splashed itself?

That's a thought -

the marker theory was suggested by the Durham Trust chap at the Visitor Centre, but he could well have been mistaken.
