There is an old Ash tree in the woods that I visit that hosts a good display of Polyporus squamosus. I have always assumed that the state of the tree was the result of somebody lighting a fire in the hollowed trunk. That is what it looks like when the fungi isn't in fruit. The tree is still alive and will put on leaves. My question for the experts is, could the fungi have done this and not an arsonist at all.
