Orchid - Hayley Wood - 15 May 2011

Pyramidal shaped orchid. White flower with almost 'scribbled' burgundy markings. Spotted leaves. Although in woodland, the orchid was in a cleared and coppiced area, hence my tentative identification as a Heath Spotted Orchid.

Heath Spotted Orchid in Hayley Wood Cambridgeshire

Can somebody tell me if this is the correct identification!?

Dactylorhiza fuchsii

The 3-lobed shape of the lower lip of the flower suggests it could be common spotted orchid.

Pure Common Spotted?

Flower shape fits Common Spotted perfectly, as does the strong purple loop markings. The very slender stem and narrow, non-clasping upper leaves suggest it's a pure Spotted Orchid - the hybrids with Marsh Orchids are usually chunkier, with broad leaves clasping the upper stem. And calcareous Cambridgeshire clay is right for Common Spotted too.
