Has any one any idea what would cause this ? I was wondering virus or chemical spray.

yes Blackthorn I knew that, silly mistake. This plant was not affected last year and had a wonderful crop. As it has been affected this year will it be forever affected ?

The blackthorn may well be fine next year. This 'gall' seems to have very prolific years - I've seen lots this spring too. They are known as 'pocket plums' as, if you cut one open, it's like a pitta bread with a pocket inside!
good to know the reason for the name I will cut one open and have a look.
