Thanks for the ID. It would definitely fit because there were plenty of willow trees around. Does it feed exclusively on Salix pollen though?

That is the story. Many solitary bees are 'oligolectic' - they take pollen from only one species or a group of related species. Some on Salix, some on Lotus, one on Tormentil, one on Devil's-bit Scabious, one on Ivy, and lots more. They are happy to take nectar from other flowers, but are strict about the pollen source.
Occasionally, if the preferred source is scarce, I have seen oligolectic bees taking the 'wrong' pollen, but generally they follow the rules.
