... or Capitaine, as we like to call it. :)
I've been guilty of not looking closely enough - again. I wrote this off as a Dingy Skipper but the hind wings are wrong - more patterned. Fortunately, my wife pointed out that they were wrong. :)
I've looked through my 30-year-old Collins Field Guide (must get a new one) but am still confused. I know it's a Skipper but which Skipper. It's from Provence in the south of France, September.

Mallow Skipper (Carcharodus alceae)

If you are looking for a new European butterfly identification guide, then I would highly recommend 'Butterflies of Europe' by Tristan Lafranchis. He has also published an earlier one entitled 'Les Papillons de jour de France, Belgique et Luxembourg'.

Well done ...

... and many thanks, especially for the identification but also foor the book suggestion. I'll investigate it you-know-where.

With your info, I searched for Mallow Skipper and also found the following website very useful, not for id but for confirmation by comparing photographs:

Matt's European Butterflies

It certainly looks like his Mallow Skippers.
