Description:

Blowfly with metallic blue abdomen. The occiput has pale hairs which separate it from C.vomitoria. Parts of the head and antennae have a reddish ground colour as shown in the second pic at full size.

Calliphora

Thanks for link to NHM! N.B. NHM page only mentions two common UK Calliphora - can you be sure you have separated it from all the other British species of Calliphora?:

No I can't be sure. There was only mention of the two Calliphora on the NHM site and in my copy of Chinery so at the time I was "As sure as I can be".

I guess it's another one of those situations where microscopes are needed for positive ID and I should have played safe and posted it as "it's likely to be this but I can't be certain".

I'm starting to think I should only attempt to ID anything to family level in future and put it up as "it might be this", as there seems to always be an element of doubt esp in the insect world....
