Insect2

Observed: 1st May 2011 By: KarenL34
insect2
Description:

We found this very large bee-like insect in our window at the weekend. It was approximately 35mm long, much larger than anything we have seen before. It did not look like a hornet. The body had hairy rings. It was mostly dark in colour with some orange at the base of the thorax.

Bombus rupestris

I think this stands a good chance of being Bombus rupestris, for the reasons given by Ardea and Karen above, but I'm afraid I can't be 100% sure of it from the photo. B. rupestris is a relatively scarce bumblebee, but it has been doing quite well in recent years. If you see it again do try for another photo!
