Following the recent discussions on iSpot about how to identify our local species I took lots of photographs of this fellow in the hope that he would reveal his identify. Fortunately a couple do.

The 'tail' is not a sting,

The 'tail' is not a sting, but the swollen male genitalia. Because of the way these are held, they have a vague resemblance to a scorpion sting, hence the name.

Tail

Thanks for correcting my terminology. I meant to put sting in "quotes" but it would be wrong to imply that these flies are capable of a sting in the sense of a bee's or wasp's.
