Description:

It wasn't until I looked at the photograph on the computer that I realised just how encouraging the female had been: note inviting upturned tip of her abdomen.

Fantastic

Very difficult shot to get as there are very mobile and will not wait till you get the camera focused, there seem to be an awfully large amount of Orange tip's this spring 10 out of 10 for shot,we should have a yearly ispot award for best picture.

Thanks, Sheila. Down to pure luck (with a little help from Canon technology)!

Great shot!

I've been trying all this spring to get even a half way decent shot of orange tips, of which there are plenty in Wallingford, but they're far too active at the moment. Yesterday nearly all my attempts were sabotaged by Speckled Woods (of which there seem to be a great number too)who aggresively chased off the Orange Tips as soon as they landed!

Upturned abdomen

Rather than being an encouragement, the spread-out wings and upturned abdomen of the female are in fact telling the male to go away, because she's already mated. Whether this is successful or not is another matter.
