Description:

This bee like creature was sunning itself in a hedge in a back garden near the New Forest. It appears to have another set of smaller eyes on the back of its head, is that right? I mean, are they eyes?

Eyes

Yes, you are correct, they are eyes on the top part of the head. These are 'simple' single facet eyes (not compound eyes)called 'ocelli'.
