The bees were in and out of a nest in the bank surrounding a pond, very close to the water's edge

Oh I see! That actually makes

Oh I see! That actually makes a lot more sense - we were wondering what would happen to the bees if we had heavy rain (if only- we really need it!) The bees were in and out of the little holes so we assumed there was a nest in there. Thank you for the information - very interesting! Poppy
