Description:

Cuckoo bee found by a messy pool in a small woodland which, unfortunately, has a large patch of Japanese knotweed close by.
I have identified this as B. vestalis but there has been some debate about recent postings of this species. The Edwards/Jenner book states that the yellow is darker and side patches (on the abdomen above the white tail) are larger in B. vestalis - but this is a difficult separation unless you have the two species side by side. The BWARS site states that the side patches are "a less intense yellow" and smaller in B. bohemicus - however their photographs show B. bohemicus with a darker yellow thorax than their photograph of B. vestalis. Confused? I certainly am! Help!!
