This is the exact creature I came on to identify, today. Looks like a bumble bee but there are no all black bumbles. Would love to know what it is.
Me too! I'm even more intrigued now that it isn't even a bumble bee. Hopefully someone will hop on soon and solve the mystery for us!
I have seen one of these today at Creswell craggs in the east midlands on comfry flowers. They are not confined to the south of UK after all. It was flying too fast for a picture as observed by others here.
I came on this website to identify this bee. Lots of them in my garden in Shropshire.
It is interesting to hear that there are lots about anywhere at this time of year - we should be down to the last few stragglers by now
