Dead great crested grebe

Description:

Found this at my local lake.... first thought was a shag or cormorant because of the colour, however looking at the bill shape it cannot be this.... from the white on the face and breast it is most likely a great crested grebe which is strange as i have never seen one on this lake.

Great Crested Grebes -

are not always welcomed by anglers, which may be why they are not seen on that lake, or it may just not be suitable (not enough fish for the birds).
That's not necessarily to say that an angler has killed this one. They are apparently very vulnerable on land, as they are so well-adapted to the aquatic habitat.
