Boxes in Hedgerow

Description:

This may not have anything to do with wildlife, but I think it may do. Does anyone know what this box is for. I found a number of them in Mop End Lane, near Amersham, every few yards along the lane, each one with a sequential number.

Boxes in hedgerow

Thank you, Roger, for your identification. This fits with a planning application by an outfit called the Trail Riders Fellowship to turn the lane from a bridleway to a BOAT (Byway Open to All Traffic). This was refused by Bucks CC but they were overruled by a planning inspector. The motto of the Trail Riders Fellowship is "conserving our heritage of green roads". Quite how you conserve them by riding motor cycles up and down them I don't know.

If they find Dormice..

it might change the application status.

Might it?...

...the decision was made two years ago, but the boxes look quite recent. Could they change the status back if dormice were found? I shall ask the appropriate department of Bucks CC.

I don't know ...

the technicalities but if found they will have to make sure the Dormouse are not disturbed and if so take steps to take them into account this is called "mitigation". Make sure you get a copy of the Survey Report as it might get "lost" in County Hall.

A section from the Howardian LNR website - "The Dormouse is protected throughout Europe by the Bonn Convention and EC Habitats Directive. In Britain it is fully protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 under Schedule 5 these make it an offence to deliberately or intentionally kill, injure, take, possess, or trade and prohibits interference with places used for shelter or protection, or disturbing animals occupying such places."

I believe this is still the case.
