I should leave it to the experts!

Just googled Tachina fera - it does look rather like it.

I can't quite decide whether it is a good idea to have a stab at an identification when you don't really know what you're talking about: on the one hand you risk being wrong, and confusing someone else, but on the other hand it might turn out to be right - and just by thinking about it and looking a bit more carefully, I've ended up learning a bit more... On balance, I'll probably go on risking it - especially as the system is set up to say 'I'm not sure'.

Differences

If you look at Mesembrina you will see a very shiny all "black" fly with distinct orange patches at the base of the wings.

Tachina fera has paler legs and is much more of a "blackish" dark brown colour on the thorax, plus usually has distinctive orange patches on the side of the abdomen, dusting on the surface of the abdomen and lots more bristles.
