Bibio

Ophrys, Thank for your comments as they have highlighted the fact that I have left out an important detail; the oxalis that this fly is on is not wood sorrel but a cultivated variety of a different species i.e. Oxalis oregana which is much larger.

Okay!

I probably should not have assumed it was Wood Sorrel...sorry! Either way, it is worth being aware that there are other Bibio species around. How long was this one, then, do you think? If the wing length was 8mm or more, then it should be marci.

Size

Ophrys, from what I remember we are talking a larger wing length here. Nevertheless I hadn't checked for related species and your caution is therefore relevant and accepted.
