Cockchaffer Beetle Larva?

Two of these were found by relation on 1 Apr 2011, in the old compost of a domestic greenhouse tomato bed in Westergate, West Sussex. Clay soil and by mature oaks. Grubs' size apparently = or >3cms ("At least as big as a 12 year old child's little finger"). Legs very prominent but unable to support them, so tended to roll over. Unfortunately placed on a bird table and dually eaten!

Just as well it was eaten! I

Just as well it was eaten! I have an idea that they love roots, and will destroy whatever is in the pot....
