Luminous violet colour

I have noticed that the violet colouring is very luminous, and that the hair follices seem to enhance the effect,is the purpose defence against predators of which I understand ther are few, other than the Cuckoo or has it another function.
The violet colour would make it unappealing even without the long hairs ,and their size at 50-55mm.
