Green woodpeckers have to be

Green woodpeckers have to be one of the 'best' common British birds at cheering up a walk or a dreary day! Like a kngfisher, every time you see one it is special (no matter how many hundreds or even thousands you have seen!).

Nonetheless, I do still like the old English name, and when my little boy was just a little bit yonger, we enjoyed watching, together, the pompous antics of Professor 'Yaffles' on the brlliant Bagpuss. Now he watches the real ones.
