Very distant photo - but call heard clearly. About 10 minutes later a second call from another direction was heard, and I saw the bird fly towards the tree in this picture (not able to get a shot but it had the typical hawk-like flight). Fairly confident there were also two different birds about a mile away. Given the habitat, they will probably parasitise Meadow Pippits nesting on the heath.

The hawk - like appearance and flight

Are said to be part of the adaptation to the parasitic lifestyle - it scares the host birds, and deters them from approaching while it is on the nest.
