As you can see this little chap did not stick around once it saw my camera coming its way. It was predominantly black with a red kidney shaped dot on each wing with a further black dot inside that.

Or maybe an invading Harlequin?

Or maybe the Harlequin ladybird perhaps? They are very variable and some illustrated have spots very like this one. We had loads of harlequins last year (or maybe the year before), but I've only seen native 7-spots so far this year.

Hard to tell, but the "eyed" shape of the spot suggests it might well be the invading species.
