Goldfinch's picture

Observed: 20th February 2011 By: GoldfinchGoldfinch’s reputation in Birds

I saw these two birds on the feeder eating Niger seed, I believe they are adolescent for their plumage had not fully developed.
Finches are well known for travelling in pairs and have liquid twittering songs. They have thin beaks to extract seeds from thistles.

There is no reason to see these as young birds. At the time of year of your sighting, there is very little difference in the plumage of a bird born the previous spring or one born any year before that.
A bird that was not a full adult (i.e., one born the previous year) would have more pointed tail feathers and might show a less yellow wing-bar, but otherwise would be identical to an adult.

Essentially, they all look the same in february!!

Well done.

Nice to see you have finally got Goldfinches on your feeder. No turning back now; they'll cost you a fortune in Niger seed once word gets out!

Just go out there and do it!!!
