Can anyone recommend either a good website or an affordable book which can assist me with Pipit identification? Most bird books I have looked at so far just confuse me!
You certainly won't be the only person who has problems with pipits so don't worry too much about it. One of the main problems is that there is a lot of overlap in plumage features between some species (especially Meadow and Tree Pipits). Calls are very useful, but often more difficult to learn.
The best ID guide to pipits is the Helm Identification Guide "Pipits and Wagtails of Europe, Asia and North America", but this certainly isn't cheap, and it may not make the subject any clearer to you!
The Collins Bird Guide is the best single field guide to all of Europes birds, and covers pipits very well. Alternatively you could look for a secondhand copy of the "MacMillan Guide to Bird Identification" - this doesn't cover all bird species, instead concentrating on difficult species pairs/groups with an emphasis on UK birds.
Thank you so much for your advice - it's much appreciated! It's also reassuring to know that I'm not the only one who has Pipit problems!
