I have lived here for thirty years and I have never seen a badger in this area, dead or alive. I think this one had caught a glancing blow from a passing train and had crept into my garden where it died; the railway line is at the bottom of my garden. It was obviously out during daylight hours as it was noticed around 1600 hours and was not there an hour earlier.

I think you are right -

although it's unusual to see them in daylight, the injury may have happened the previous night, and the animal had declined over the following day.
Badger-baiters sometimes leave the bodies by roadsides, so that they are passed off as road casualties, but this seems very unlikely here.

Thanks for your thoughts

Thanks for your thoughts regarding the time of the injury; I had not thought of that!
