A bit of contect might narrow down the possibilities - how big? was it found on a particular plant?
Sorry I should have put all of this,
it was no more than 2.5cm and was found along the lower parts of grass.
I'm rubbish at caterpillars, but Pugs are 'loopers', which yours does not appear to be. I can't offer any alternative ID though.
at first I thought it a sawfly, however it only has 4 pairs of pro-legs which rules it out, dosn't it?
Have a look at pictures of The Blackneck on ukleps - there is certainly a similarity in terms of overall colour scheme.
PS I can't spell "context"
That is quite similar, I have never recorded a blackneck. & It would be unusual to see one in Manchester?
