Description:

This beetle was walking along my garden path and then it disappeared into a crack in the concrete. It was about the same size as a ladybird (possibly a little larger). From a distance it looked black in colour but when I enlarged the photo, I noticed it had faint red spots on the elytra. Any ideas? According to my insect book, there are some species similar to Hister impressus which have red spots on the elytra. Is it one of these?

Thanks! I've looked at some

Thanks! I've looked at some photos of Margarinotus (Paralister) purpurascens and I think your identification is probably correct.
