Thank you for your help, not sure but a think it was dark, at the base of the stem.
Just to add, there was a lot of Birch polypore on edge of the plantation, this was on a dead branch inside the conifers, this is a old plantation, long overdue cutting.
Have has a look again and the closest I can get to is Polyporus ciliatus,not sure what the common name is,hopefully one of the expert's will give a more acurate ID.
