Is this a lichen?

These greyish structures, which are whiter near the tips, were protruding from a piece of rotting wood on a bank. When pulled off the stems felt quite woody but the ends seemed to shrink fairly quickly. Are they lichen? I cannot find anything similar on any website

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.
