Jon, how would you distinguish male nitida from carantonica (= scotica)? I usually struggle to do it with specimens and am not sure at all from this photo. On another recent bee you mentioned carantonica having a hairier abdomen, but that isn't clear from my specimens.

I have found the keys very unsatisfactory but have examined quite a few specimens looking for reliable features to separate common species. There seems to be a definite difference in the hairiness of the abdomens of scotica and nitida particularly evident under a microscope but also discernible from a good quality photo. But I am no expert and am still learning!
