This vole started to run across the path, saw us and ran back into the grass.

I would agree with field vole, assuming we can see all of its tail ie. the rest of it doesn't just happen to be hidden in the grass on both photos. Tail about third length of body and lack of reddish colouration seen in bank voles.

Certainly the tail was short, it was the first thing we noticed as it ran across the path.
