The cones are Larch, not Pine. Crossbills are very numerous in N and W Scotland just now, but you are lucky to have seen them so clearly. They are amazingly secretive, and often you would never suspect them until you hear the cones drop, or recognise their calls.

Thanks for your comment M. I have seen these quite frequently since January in the woods behind Ardrishaig but always at distance and very camera shy. This group were at a different location and seemed much less wary. They were quite happy to sit in the tree while I stood below clicking away.
