if not a result of the photography, might suggest a Dog Stinkhorn, Mutinus caninus. But I think it's far too big, so I'd go with the identification offered.
Revision: still not sure about the size, but will go with the flow!
RogerR - I think you might be right because that was its true colour and it was no more than 3 inches high.
