Gnat with parasites attached

Observed: 4th June 2010 By: David Chapman
Gnat being parasitised.
Description:

Spotted this at about 03:00am after a night out. There are about 10 parasitic mites attached to the gnat's abdomen/thorax. Can anyone identify them (i.e., the mites!) for me please?? Thanks.

Identifications
  • A parasitic mite (?)
Confidence: It's likely to be this, but I can't be certain.

mites and cranefly

I think they are mites, but maybe not parasitic, some mites simply attach themselves to insects in order to move around.

The insect is a cranefly in genus Limonia, I think it is Limonia phragmitidis.
