Identification

The most reliable field characteristic of E bernhardus is a red band on the right claw. For some reason this is seldom mentioned in keys and field guides. Other characteristics generally need at least a magnifying glass.

While P bernhardus is the commonest hermit, I still can't see any features that make me certain that its the species figured. A safer ID is Pagurid species.

researching this species, all

researching this species, all resources say that the crab is a reddish and pale colour but this crab was very dark?

Is this just a juvenile colouration or?

Colour isn't always a good character.

There are at least 18 species of hermit crab in UK waters. Some of the more exotic species are found in SW England. Some can be separated by characteristics of the claws but there are a whole range of other characteristics you are never going to see unless the crab is viewed under a microscope once removed from the host shell. Colour isn't a character thats diagnostic for species ID
