This species is common and conspicuous at Sungei Buloh. I believe Bengal Monitor Varanus bengalensis is also recorded in Singapore but it has a more elongated slit-like nostril that is positioned roughly half way between the eye and the tip of the snout. The nostril in the animal photographed is closer to the tip of the snout which is more consistent with V. salvator.
