Description:

Seen today in my garden. I know identifying flies from photos is tricky, but I wonder if its possible to say what type of fly this is - at family, maybe genus level? Thanks.

Interested

Just adding a comment so that I get to see what the decision is from someone more knowledeable! Photographed what I am sure is the same species on Sallow in my own garden, today.

Male or female?

I thought this was a male fly with touching eyes - am I mistaken?

Holoptic eyes

You are right about the eyes.

I am not sure what this fly is, but it would be better not to have a particular species noted, unless certain of that ID, in my opinion.

Photo id not possible.

After posting these photos here, I also posted them on the Dipterist Forum where I have had feedback that this fly could be P. angustigena as suggested here, but that it cannot be distinguished from P rudis and other Pollenia species without microscopic examination. As a consequence I have added a revision to change the id to genus level only.
