With ichneumons and their kin, most people are happy if they get to family. I think we have over 1000 species in UK, and only a handful of specialists who will go to species.

I guess that with respect to these insects I am at the opposite end of the spectrum from that handful of specialists!
From a quick look on the web it looks as though Gino's suggestion of Tenthredo is probably correct so it would seem it is actally a sawfly which rather underlines the point!
I have added my agreement to his suggestion as the most likely ID unless anyone comes up with any better suggestion.
