Damaged sycamore tree.Trunk is over 18 inches in diameter. It almost looks like the bark has stopped growing and been pulled apart as the trunk has grown.

    Likely ID
    Fire damage
Confidence: It's likely to be this, but I can't be certain.

It's not fire damage.

The damage is quite high up the trunk and the lower trunk is undamaged. The tree is on a steep inaccessibly river bank, not somewhere a localised fire could be made. There have been no mountain fires in this area for over 15 years.
Although there are signs of the bark healing over parts of the wound there are other areas where the damage seems to be continuing with more bark being destroyed. In the second photo much of the bark shown is dead and I wondered if the marks on the trunk in the third photo may be due to damage occurring under the bark surface.
