Description:

Observed in on a bank at the side of a path. The bank consists of rough grass and associated plants and a row of trees. A rather old specimen which got battered further in my rucksack. The spore sac is just under 2cm, the spores are dark brown. The rays have bent underneath the spore sac. There appears to be the remains of a collar.

Identifications

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

At that size it is unlikely

At that size it is unlikely to be G triplex but not sure which one it might be.

Earthstar

Do they not shrink and shrivel with age like us?

I don't seem to be shrinking

I don't seem to be shrinking with age ;) They do shrivel a bit but the size generally stays the same. Triplex which usually has a distinct collar can loose this over winter and end up looking like a large version of some of the more stalked Earth Stars but its size should still be a defining factor.

Shrinking

Thanks for your comments and long may your non-shrinkage continue.
